Everyone knows the stress of staying on track with healthy meals can seem exhausting and nearly impossible.
Although I can appreciate the quick granola bar tossed in my daughter’s lunch or a Friday pizza night, I also love having my fridge stocked with healthy items that I can just as easily grab on the go. What I’ve learned is that you’re more likely to avoid unhealthy food options if they’re simply not there. Out of sight, out of mind, as they say…right?
If your fridge is full of healthy, nutritious foods, you’re more likely to eat them, period. So, if you’re looking for ways to get your fridge in order for fall, read my tips below!
Trust me…an organized fridge will change your life (no exaggeration here)!
1. Meal prep, for real
I know, I know…you hear it all of the time. Prep your meals on Sunday and then you will have your meals ready for the entire week. Sometimes prepping ALL of your meals is easier said than done. With that said, spending an hour on Sunday to chop up all of your fruits and veggies and stock up on easy and healthy lunch items will make eating healthy during the week a no brainer.
For example, I cut up carrots, cucumbers and celery, and wash all of my berries (make sure you dry them really well before putting them into a container or else they will mould quickly). I then organize them into containers that are easily accessible.
I also dice my onions, boil my eggs, and cook my quinoa for easy already prepared work lunches. If your children are old enough and can help themselves to the fridge, they will have various healthy options that they can choose from.
I also use plastic bins to organize my yogurt, fruit pouches, cheese, drinks, and condiments. It always seems like a tedious task, but I can promise it is worth it!
2. Sparking water and fruit infused water
If you’re a soda lover or simply struggle to drink water during the day, stock your fridge with sparkling and fruit infused water. My personal favourite is lime mint infused water or grapefruit rosemary infused water (this combo is SO good)! When you open your fridge and see the jug right in front of you, you’ll be more tempted to pour yourself a glass. As well, I always fill my water bottle with my fruit infused water prior to leaving for work.
3. Get rid of old, unused condiments
When I did a complete fridge overhaul, it felt so good to get rid of those old condiments that we no longer use. They take up unnecessary space, are often times sticky and messy, and likely many are expired. Get rid of old condiments and you’ll free up a ton of space.
4. Use glass containers to store your pre-cut fruits and vegetables
The truth is, the plastic from containers can migrate into your food. This can leave your perishable items with unwanted toxic chemicals, without you even realizing it. A safe bet is to switch to glass containers!
So, there you have it, my four easy tips on how I stay organized and on track with my Fall eating regime. Tidying up my fridge and taking the time to food prep has been a game changer – try it out and let us know what you think!
