One of my favourite parts about entertaining is showing off my home bar. I love making welcome cocktails before every family dinner like the TV show, Gilmore Girls!
For those of you who have never seen Gilmore Girls, the Gilmores have a little sitting area for receiving guests where they would chat about Rory’s new school or Lorelei’s new love interest while Richard makes dirty martinis from the bar cart. This has always been the inspiration for my home bar because I love how interactive the set up is!
Below are some items I’ve used to build a functional home bar:
1. Serving Trays
I like to use serving trays for easy clean up. Rather than wiping down a table, it’s much easier to wipe down a tray. I also love using trays to section off all of my components. One tray can hold glassware, another citrus fruit, and the options are limitless.
2. Glassware
It is my firm belief that glassware should have some weight to it. When choosing glassware, I like ones with ridges because they feel sturdier and when the glass sweats, it doesn’t make the glass slippery. Along with that, glasses with some weight seem to be more durable, which means they most likely won’t chip or shatter every time someone clicks glasses #cheers.
3. Bar Tools
Most cocktails require a minimum of three tools: a cocktail shaker, a lemon juicer, and stirrer. For a starting bar, I would recommend buying the bar tools in a set to ensure everything you need to make a simple cocktail is in there. Slowly add to the collection as you find unique bar tools you like, such as an electric measuring cup, a muddler or a fancy strainer.
